Windswept Updos

At Michael Kors (left), hairstylist Orlando Pita gave models disheveled updos, with plenty of loose tangles around the face. (A one-inch curling iron and a dusting of Osis Dust It Mattifying Powder got the job done.) At Rochas, teased clumps of hair were pinned and twisted into haphazard works of art; at Tom Ford, hair was pushed off the face and rolled into unfussy French twists.

Mixed Textures

To update typical Rag & Bone (above) strands (easy, downtown, chic), hairstylist Guido shellacked centerparted hair with a generous blast of Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray, before hitting it with a blowdryer for a clean and crisp finish. "By adding different textures and products and using them more extremely, I gave the natural grunge look a modern element," he said. At John Galliano hair was swept straight back, sans part; models at Salvatore Ferragamo, Balenciaga, Max Mara and Marni sported similarly slicked down, centerparted styles. To the straight part to create a flat, clean, and crisp look on top, making sure to eliminate any fly-aways.

Old World Braids

After funky innovations on the simple plait last season, this time around braids were much less avant-garde. In fact, they were plucked right out of the romantic past. At Alberta Ferretti (above), Guido wove diffused curls into thick skeins, tugging out tendrils around the face. "The messy structure resembles a hairstyle a peasant girl might wear during the Renaissance," he said. At Giles and Rachel Zoe, the textures were also fuzzy and undone. At Nicole Miller, Naeem Khan, and Rebecca Minkoff, stylists pulled the braids up and away, pinning them around the head in regal, Frida Kahlo-inspired crowns.

Gold Details

At Jason Wu (above), hairstylist Odile Gilbert topped off long, exaggerated ponytails with precise gold barrettes. (Similar versions are available online at Colette.) At Elie Saab, golden headbands were woven into wet down 'dos. For the more freeform Midas touch, gold leaf was placed in the parts at Dries Van Noten and sprinkled in the updos at Lela Rose. Of course Christian Dior struck gold most decisively: Makeup artist Pat McGrath bleached the brows, then layered powder and glitters for an extreme gilded finish.
